I must say.. I really like the look of this birdhouse. There are several Home Bazaar 'decorative' birdhouses which I would like to own, however, after closer inspection of this model, I have serious doubts it will survive even 2 NY Winters without rotting and falling apart. If you live in a US State with less demanding weather and you protect it by placing it under a porch or entry-way cover, it may be O.K.

Now, I don't want to take away all your joy after finding this little gem :). The way to proceed here is to take the back off and brush all exposed wood with a water repelling clear stain or varnish, preferable a high grade marine varnish. Then seal all seams with an appropriate bead of silicone caulking. Good, let's move on to the outside of the bird house --- Use a super-fine sandpaper and lightly sand the white primer/stain that is already applied when you receive the birdhouse. Now seal all seams with appropriate exterior caulk. You can find it at Home Improvement Stores. Then apply 2-3 thin coats of solid color white fence and deck stain (not paint!). Behr makes a good one. Let them dry for at least 48 hrs. between coats.

Overall, the asking price for this little birdhouse is unreasonable, considering the amount of work and extra cost involved to keep it from rotting away before your very eyes.
