This is by far the best birdfeeder I've ever owned or heard of. I have had one for years, and it is still going strong. Its ingenious design makes it completely weatherproof. The parts are threaded one above another on a central shaft making it a cinch to completely disassemble it for cleaning (which I never get around to doing).The seeds can be plucked one by one by the birds through a narrow gap around the body while they stand on the bottom shelf which is shielded from the rain by another wide tent-like plastic dish.

Use only black oil sunflower seed. Regular sunflower seeds are too big to go through the gap. Most birds like black oil seed best anyway. Because the feeding gap stretches all around the outside of the seed container, many birds can eat at the same time. We have little birds like sparrows and finches at the same time as bigger birds like cardinals and bluejays.

Refilling the huge 6-cup (1-1/2 quart) bin is a cinch: Take feeder off the hook, set it down, unscrew the top hanger, lift off the top disk, and pour, then put the top disk and hanger back. I bought a trash can that holds a 25-pound bag of seed.I buy the seed at the local farm supply store for less than $10, and scoop it into the feeder with a plastic water pitcher which I leave in the trash can.

I know it's a lot of money,but believe me, it's worth every penny.

This is a beautifully crafted feeder. I purchased the blue one to match the bird bath in my yard. Unfortunately, it is not squirrel proof. A squirrel knocked it down the very first day, and he either chewed the string or just broke it with his weight. The yellow finches have taken to it, but I found the perching stick on the ground (pesky squirrel again?!) Also, I was disappointed in the hanging apparatus-- one string that you have to figure out how to knot, loop and hang. Again, this is a beautifully crafted feeder, but seems more decorative than functional. For this reason, I regret the $24.99 I spent, since I'm more interested in functional bird feeders.

I hope the company adds a cotton enclosure to cover the metal platform to their supplies for this bird house. It's a lovely bird house but this spring much of the birds' the nest fillings fell through the aluminum mesh nest platform down into the cavity below. For 2013 I've sewn a cotton enclosure sack (from thin white t-shirt fabric) to cover completely both sides of the metal platform. I've also sewn thin cloth ties on each side where the "spikes" fit to hold the platform in place so it won't slip down on one side or the other. I tied the cotton-covered metal platform to the black bars on each side, then I cut off the extra length of the ties so they would not be a problem for the birds.

Varicraft AV-2M Avian Mixed Seed Feeder Review

Even the squirrels love them too, LOL! As I have posted on their other feeders with the metal inserts where they claim they are "squirrel proof" don't believe it. All of the Varicraft feeders are top notch without question! Feeders are well built and durable. They just are not squirrel proof! I currently own 4 of the Varicraft feeders - two of these large tank variety and 2 w/o the large top capacity. We have taken inexpensive plastic salad bowls, cut a slit in the bottom of the bowls and pulled the handle up through the slit creating a large dome over the top of the feeder. Squirrels struggle to get into those feeders. The large green tank feeder (AV-2M0) is ALMOST enough to keep the squirrels spiraling out of control trying to get into them. I have found that the red squirrels don't seem able to eat out of the feeder holes so they sit on the bottom tray and eat spilled seeds. The large gray squirrels must be smarter because they know how to stick a paw into the holes and pull out seeds. The best solution to squirrels is to position your feeders under a porch, on a wall where a squirrel can not jump or climb the wall or a post, high enough up off the ground and on a slippery post, where they can't scale the post otherwise you will deal with squirrels! I am now dealing with red squirrels that have figured out how to jump at least 6 feet from a tree to the tray on the large feeders - eeeek! The gray squirrels now jump from the ground to the tray! Tray is great for the birds but even better for the squirrels! Position of the feeders is always the secret to keeping the squirrels away - okay I'm off to see how I can adjust my feeders once again! Great Feeders and I would buy again!

We have alot of Crakles here black birds.. those agervating birds you need to get rid of !!! Well this Feeder is the one you want!!!!!!!!!! Holds a bout 12 lbs of food.. Can mix your food in it.. if you like I use sunflower seeds mostly... U can adjust the tention so u can let birds of dif sizes that you want to be eating the food.. I have mine set on the lightest weight which dose finches.. yellow birds red finches.. This when full is very heavy so make sure you have a good pole to suport it.. when your hanging it.. I took a chain and slid it throw the handle just incase i didnt want it falling off the J pole i have it on.. in the wind. when its full it bairly swings.. in 50 + winds.. which is amazing to me.. Thank you Akerue Industries for great help in picking this one out for me.. comes with a pole also but right now ground frozen so will use it hanging.. from a pole.. Easy filling small clasp to push in the top flips back.. Make sure that you lift the top when you are closing it... fliped back because it has a way that it keeps it open wile you fill it dosent fall on your knuckles.. Love it!!!
