It took a little while for the birds to figure out this product for some reason, but when they finally did, it was hard to replace them fast enough. We've seen most of the species on the property eating these logs (either hanging right on the log itself or on the ground below eating pieces that were knocked off) and they are very easy to replace when completely eaten. All in all, a big hit at our house.

Unlike what's stated on the website, this feeder is extremely hard to keep the mold out. The bottle opening is so small that there aren't any brushes on the market can reach inside to scrub the interior of the bottle. In addition, the moisture gets trap in the bottle that it takes more than a week to dry. Unless you're willing to use bleach (environmental unsound and highly toxic to animals) and insert rice to do the scrubbing + killing molds, you should not consider buying this product. Vinegar is safe but not as effective if the container isn't allow to dry. The plastic part also has a hard-to-reach area that you need to use a curved brush to do the job.

What a shame. I really love the safe materials (glass and #5 plastic) of this feeder.

Droll Yankees Yankee Whipper Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder, Model# YCPD90 Review

This has been the best product I've found to feed the birds and not the squirrels, but after about 3 weeks the squirrels have found a way to outsmart even this product. The idea of the tube portion being to long for the squirrels to reach the opennings and the flippers not allowing squirrels access to the openings is true ...but my squirrels ,which have now obtained their masters degree in feeder management, have figured out that by hanging upsidedown off the top of the feeder and letting go from the cap edge,that by sliding down the feeder while straddling the tube like a mechanical bull, and as they just reach the point of no return and slipping off, as unschooled squirrels should, they grab for the openings, where the fruits of delights hide...such as nuts, seeds and berries..., hang on by one hand? paw? swinging like a cirqu de sole acrobat and use the free appendage to shovel the food into waiting mouths. When they reach either maximum fullness or cramping of fingers/claws? they gracefully let go do a single head over heels flip and land on the ground below...oh well it worked for a few weeks...my next attempt at controlling the sky-rocketing costs of increased consumption of BIRD FOOD will be to put a large plastic bowl over the top of the feeder (also sold by Droll) to try and prevent the hanging acrobatic slide to the food in the first place. Either I have very smart squirrels or they have an agreement with the Droll Yankee Feeders to increase the cost to the consumers by requiring more and more attachments. Forgive any spelling and grammatical errors I'm obviously not as smart as my Connecticut squirrels.

This feeder has worked about 50% of the time. I tried it with a hopper feeder and, though the baffle extended past the edge of the hopper, when the baffle tilted to slid the squirrel off, they were able to grab the edge of the feeder half the time. I am now using it to protect a long thin thistle feeder and it does well as the edges are much farther away from the baffle edge. It does well keeping rain out of the food. One other problem occurs when the squirrels are on the feeder. They get the feeder to spin and this screws the baffle loose causing both the baffle and the feeder to crash to the ground.
