There are two excellent in-box House Sparrow traps I use, and this is one of them, the other being the Van Ert trap.I purchased mine through "Troyer's Birds' Paradise" in Conneautville, PA. They do not have a website, but have an 800 number. Nice folks who know what they are doing. Price per trap was $8.95 in 2012 (less if you purchase ten or more).
I own seven of these in-box sparrow traps and they have all been in use for several years. They are sturdy and can be inserted or removed at any time.
The trap attaches to the inside of the front panel of the nest box. Upon opening your nest box, insert the trap and match up the entrance holes. Then turn the large screw on the trap so it goes into the interior's front panel. This can be a chore as you will be trying to screw this large piece into the wood with your fingers. Takes a bit of elbow grease, but once the screw is in, this makes it easier if you need to re-use the trap at a later date. You can always mark where the screw should go, and pre-drill a starter hole.
Once the trap is secure to the interior front panel and the entrance holes match up, flip the metal bar up and place the tip of the wire under the bar. You will see the lower part of the wire sticks out into the box interior. Close the nest box and secure it. House Sparrows are strong little birds and can easily force open an unsecured box hinge.
When a House Sparrow enters the nest box, it jumps down onto the lower wire which then triggers the metal bar to fall and block the entrance hole. The bright orange side of the bar across the entrance hole lets you know something has triggered the trap. There is enough room for the trapped bird to poke a bit of its forehead and bill out; makes identifying who may be in there easier.
To remove a House Sparrow, or an accidentally caught Native bird, place a large laundry net bag ($1 at dollar stores) over the box and tighten the drawstring around the pole. Open the nest box by working through the net bag. The bird will fly out into the net bag and you can gently catch them. If a Native, release it. If an Alien House Sparrow, you have some choices on course of action. Refer to [...] for professional advice.
Never set the trap without monitoring it to avoid harming a Native, learn to identify the alien House Sparrows and study the harm they cause to Native cavity nesters. NEVER release a House Sparrow intentionally.
I highly recommed this trap to serious nest box landlords. It is a must for anyone managing their Bluebird trails or back yard nest boxes. Hopefully Amazon will be able to carry this again in the future.
