My goal was to get some cardinals coming to my yard. The problem I was having was that my feeders allowed the safflower and sunflower seeds to be tossed to the ground.

I wanted a feeder that was designed specifically for sunflower seed. This feeder is somewhat pricey but it I wanted to try it for a couple of reasons. First, the mesh is a good way to contain the seed. Second, the top cover diameter is large enough to keep the seed dry.

This feeder works for me. I now have cardinals coming to it on a regular basis. Not sure but maybe the red color helps?
A nice feature is that on the bottom inside where the seed sits it is cone shaped...keeping the seed falling to the outside edge as seed is consumed. This is easy to fill and holds a lot of seed.
Constructed of heavy gauge metal with a nice red finish. The mesh part is plastic.

Note: when filling the feeder a little bit of the seed tends to bounce out of the sides due to the cone shape as the seed starts to hit it.. So If that is a concern you can hold a box or something to catch the seed and put back in.
