I like this platform feeder and actually have several of them. It has several things going for it with the metal screen bottom leading the list. I personally hang these from extended angle iron which I attach to trees. We live in an extremely wooded area of five acres and I have feeders scattered all over the place. In the orchard I hang them from limbs with wire...this works out quite well.

These feeders are stoutly made and since they are made of cedar...a very good grade of cedar, they last quite awhile and are a snap to clean. Do be warned though, there is absolutely nothing squirrel proof about these feeders - no, far from it. This in our case does not matter all that much because we tend to get as much a kick out of watching these little critters as we do the birds. I have other feeders nearer the house which are indeed squirrel proof, or at least squirrel resistant.

No I will be honest with you. I bought one of these feeders sometime ago and was pleased with it. If you have any woodworking skills at all, they are extremely easy to make and a minimum of tools are necessary. I have been making these things, following this pattern, and tweaking the design to fit specific needs. I use a double layer of hardware wire for the bottoms which works just fine and if installed correctly causes little to no loss of seed yet drains quite well. I have four of these home-made job in our orchard and they are very effective. I do recommend that you use brass screws rather than nails as they to not rust and corrode.

Now I am not going to set here and tell you that I save a lot of money by doing this. When all is said and done, particularly if you factor in labor cost, I am probably not saving a dime...if even that. Wood is expensive and so is the wire for the bottom and the very heavy cloths line wire I use to hang the things with. I merely enjoy building simple stuff like this.
