The maker of this owl box, Tom Stephan, lives in a community near us. We had him install one of his boxes over two years ago. Don't be discouraged if you don't get owls right away! We didn't get our first nesting pair until the year after we installed it. The same pair hatched a second time the same year, resulting in four owlets. They arrived in late December the first time; this year a pair (don't know if it's the same pair) has nested again! Tom installed ours on top of a metal pole that he painted a dark green so as to not be as noticeable. Although we live in Southern California, we had some terrific winds the last two years. The box swayed a bit (with the owls inside), but Tom installed it solidly. We've had no problems with bees residing in it (which can be a problem with some boxes). Just before it turns really dark at night, we can see one of the owls flying back and forth from a nearby tree, to our roof, to the box. We have two cats that go outside during the day; but since the box is up very high (about 15' from the ground), they pay no attention to it. Our wild rabbit population is completely gone from our yard. It's important to install the box high up in a tree or on a pole, a good distance from the house and activity. The opening should face in a northerly direction. This box was built to last. It's on its third year and is as sturdy as ever. So much fun. Once the fledglings are on their own and the "parents" have left the box, they live in the box until they're adults. During the summer it can sound like a frat party every night, but they are so much fun to watch. They appear to be "showing off" their new flying skills to each other. By fall they had completely left to be on their own. Wish I could show you some good photos, but most of them turned out blurry because of the low-light conditions. Would have loved to install a video camera in there to watch them from inside our house. Although we bought a simpler version, all of the boxes Tom makes are quality. I see his boxes everywhere in this area, especially Fallbrook, which is a more rural community. Although I love to shop at Wild Birds Unlimited, their owl boxes were WAY too heavy and didn't have the design that make the boxes not only attractive to the barn owls but safer and healthier for them as well. Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Hoo's Hoo Barn Owl Nest Box" are high quality item.
