FYI; I have reviewed & purchased other Bird's Choice feeders (you can read them here on Amazon). I have bought many different kids of feeders from many companies, and I always go back to the Bird's Choice feeders. They are more expensive and well worth it.This the most expensive feeder I have ever purchased. It's worth every penny. I have reviewed the benefits of the recycled plastic that Bird's Choice uses before; it's GREAT stuff. This feeder is a breeze to clean and re-rill also.
I have this feeder situated in a way that the squirrel cannot get to it. This is a must for any fly-thru feeder, because the feed is always exposed. To top it off, I use mainly Safflower in it, which squirrels hate (it's bitter). So you have to take that into consideration before you buy a fly-through. A squirrel can get to a fly-thru by jumping over onto it, jumping up into it, or climbing up a pole if it is pole mounted. I have hung this one in a way that they can't get to it without falling off and risking injury.
I put primarily safflower in this feeder, which was the plan - I admit that I bought this expensive feeder and the only goal was to get the elusive cardinals in. I tried many other feeders before this one to get them, but nothing worked with any continued success.
I now have 4-5 male cardinals and many more female cardinals regularly! The chickadees also attend, and the titmouse, and the sparrows are always hungry.
I put in whole and shelled peanuts and the nuthatch (my favorite bird) and the blue jays make quick work of taking them away.
The only complaint I have is the mourning doves. Once they figured out how to navigate and get purchase, they show up to this feeder with the sparrows. They love safflower too and will gorge themselves. But, if I add in the whole peanuts at the same time that I re-fill the safflower, the jays scare them off enough that they give up for awhile. This isn't a perfect solution - but it's worth it, because the gorgeous cardinals are finally in my yard, coming in numbers and returning every day at their regular feeding times and even in-between. In the winter, when the males will tolerate each other's presence, I have up to five at a time, either feeding at the fly-thru, or waiting nearby for their turn. The combination of this feeder and safflower was what did that for me. Seeing all that red in my yard is fantastic!
