Provide a spacious abode with this newly designed winter roost. With two dowels stretching from side to side, there is plenty of room for the whole family to spend a cold winter night. The front opens for inspection and clean-out, while the opening is protected from squirrels with a slate guard: Dimensions: 7-3/4"h x 18"w x 7"d.Coveside Horizontal Winter Roosting Box Review
I bought 4 Coveside Conservation birdhouses (nuthatch, wren, downy woodpecker, red-bellied woodpecker) and 2 roost boxes (horizontal and standard). They are well made and birds used them the second year forward. The slate toothbenders protected the holes from squirrels and whoever else chews out the holes.
My problem is the material. The white pine has deteriorated in the humid summers of central Virginia. White pine rots, warps and is chewed by bugs. The back of the red-bellied woodpecker house was completely rotted and/or chewed by bugs. I salvaged the hardware and slate portal protector for the next cedar woodpecker house I get and tossed it. Part of the problem was the siting, but I have similarly sited cedar houses that have not deteriorated.
It would be great if Coveside Conservation found a more durable material for moderate climates.
The rest of the houses are still working, but I can see they will need to be replaced sooner than their cedar counterparts.
Maybe in a colder climate the white pine works better. I'm sticking to cedar from now on.
