The Vari-Craft Avian-2 bird feeder is a hanging feeder with a huge three gallon seed capacity that requires only weekly filling. A vented reservoir eliminates condensation and moldy seed in the hopper. This model includes 8" seed tray to help attract a wider variety of birds. Even the squirrels love them too, LOL! As I have posted on their other feeders with the metal inserts where they claim they are "squirrel proof" don't believe it. All of the Varicraft feeders are top notch without question! Feeders are well built and durable. They just are not squirrel proof! I currently own 4 of the Varicraft feeders - two of these large tank variety and 2 w/o the large top capacity. We have taken inexpensive plastic salad bowls, cut a slit in the bottom of the bowls and pulled the handle up through the slit creating a large dome over the top of the feeder. Squirrels struggle to get into those feeders. The large green tank feeder (AV-2M0) is ALMOST enough to keep the squirrels spiraling out of control trying to get into them. I have found that the red squirrels don't seem able to eat out of the feeder holes so they sit on the bottom tray and eat spilled seeds. The large gray squirrels must be smarter because they know how to stick a paw into the holes and pull out seeds. The best solution to squirrels is to position your feeders under a porch, on a wall where a squirrel can not jump or climb the wall or a post, high enough up off the ground and on a slippery post, where they can't scale the post otherwise you will deal with squirrels! I am now dealing with red squirrels that have figured out how to jump at least 6 feet from a tree to the tray on the large feeders - eeeek! The gray squirrels now jump from the ground to the tray! Tray is great for the birds but even better for the squirrels! Position of the feeders is always the secret to keeping the squirrels away - okay I'm off to see how I can adjust my feeders once again! Great Feeders and I would buy again!
